This is an ingenious genre-bending story set in Liverpool, England, about a woman who finds herself jumping backwards into her own past to prevent her son from committing a terrible crime.

I’d seen several positive reviews of this so bought it when it came up in special on Audible, and listened to it in the car with my husband over a couple of long drives. The repeated advice from other reviewers was to try not to know too much about this in advance, and I completely agree – just go in cold and trust that the initially baffling plot will make sense eventually. This does however make writing a review tricky as I don’t want to give away any more than what’s in the blurb, so won’t write a summary.

I do think how much you like this will depend on what genres you mostly read – I like predominantly mysteries & thrillers, but enjoy fantasy elements like time travel – and this is an unusual variation of that, but it’s not at all sci-fi. I wouldn’t call it great writing, and the characters are not particularly appealing – Jen in particular is neurotic and kinda annoying, although her motivations are honourable. I just enjoyed the puzzle of figuring out what was going on – I thought it was really clever and will be on the lookout for more from this author. The audiobook narration by Lesley Sharp was excellent – she has an appealing voice and accent and handled both male and female parts admirably.
