The more I read, the more I find out about things I know nothing about. The American Plan was devised to protect the general population from venereal disease. This meant that any woman could be arrested should she be doing anything “suspicious”. She might be living alone, she might be running a boarding house, she might simply be walking down the road alone. The women (and sometimes young girls) were detained in brutal prison-like circumstances in order to be “reformed”. This plan was in effect until the mid 1940s.
This book is about such a home. There are 84 young women held in a home in South Carolina, The Colony. We learn of their despair, their hopelessness while living there. We witness their barbaric punishment should they accumulate too many demerit points. Some try to remain strong but they end up paying for it.
The staff of the home believe in what they are doing. They believe they are helping to keep the citizens of the US safe.
The reader gets to know some very strong characters……good and bad.
The story is compelling and horrifying and informative. It is well written, kudos to Ms Everhart for the research she did.
I can’t list the trigger warnings… just about every trigger possible is covered. It is not the book for everyone.
On a positive note: the book ends on a hopeful note.
