Wicked Women is the 23rd instalment of the relentlessly brilliant DI Kim Stone series, about a surly but dedicated CID detective and her loyal team from England’s Black Country. This is one of my favourite police procedural series, and this latest outing doesn’t disappoint. Because each one is a standalone mystery, you don’t need to have read the previous books to enjoy this – but when you do, you’ll want to read the rest!
A woman is stabbed to death on her way home from netball practice. No one can understand why someone would want to kill a diligent social worker and loving mother, and the team have very few clues to investigate. Then her feckless brother decides he wants to become guardian of her young daughter for the extra benefits, and with the law on his side, only Kim can save her from a future of neglect.
Even after so many books in the same series, Angela Marsons still manages to find interesting new topics to explore – I can’t say what without spoiling the mystery, but it’s a doozy. I didn’t see the big twist coming at all, and thought the misdirection here was superb. One of the best things about these books is the secondary characters from Kim’s team – Bryant, Penn and Stacey, and each time we get to know them a little better, I love them a little more. Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC.
