“Once they’re in, they never leave…”
This book certainly lived up to the hype. Eve and Charlie, a queer couple, flip houses and scored a killer deal on a old house. They are deciding whether to fix it up or tear it down and rebuild, but for now, they are fixing it up. Then one day while Charlie is out, Eve answers a knock at the door to find a family standing there, Thomas, with his wife Paige, and their kids. Thomas used to live in the house and wanted to know if he could show it to his family. After stalling, Eve lets them in. Strange things start to occur. The youngest daughter goes missing, a ghostly figure appears, the family cannot take the hint that they should leave, and then Charlie disappears. Why are all these strange occurrences happening? Is it the family, the house, or is Eve losing it?
This debut novel is mind blowing! I didn’t know what to think about what was going on. I didn’t know who was reliable and who wasn’t. And while sometimes that annoys me, it didn’t with this book. It just made this book even creepier, in a good way. I don’t read a lot of horror but this one was absolutely worth it.
Kliewer writes the creepiest atmosphere in this book. He makes the scenes jump off the page and into my imagination. The second half of the book is tense and uncomfortable in the best way possible. And the ending, oh the ending. I didn’t see it going that way, but it really has me thinking about and wanting to discuss it. That’s all I can say so that I don’t give anything away.
This was a Bookstagram made me read it and I’m so glad that I did.
