The setting in this book centres around one house, belonging to Lily. Lily is the single mother to 2 daughters, Celie and Vivian. They share the home with Lily’s widowed stepfather, Bill and Lily’s long-lost father, Gene—quite a combination which leads to a fair share of drama but also humorous situations.
This is definitely a character driven novel. Very realistically developed personalities, showing vulnerability, strength, weakness, frustration; from one extreme to another. Some reviewers have been critical of Lily, calling her needy. Perhaps she is, but, circumstances can define character.
I’ve read a few books by Jojo Moyes. She is very versatile. Her stories range from historical fiction to emotional relationship stories to family dramas. I enjoyed all the interactions with this cast of characters. At times I was frustrated with them, but I also sympathized with them and cheered for them.
The one criticism I have is that the book is a bit too long. With good editing, the story could have been condensed without losing the flow. But, it was enjoyable and entertaining.
