“Mental illness is really difficult to treat.”
Amy Brenner is a medical student who is about to spend her first night locked in the psychiatric ward. Known as Ward D, it is the hospital’s inpatient mental health unit. She has her reasons as to why she is dreading this rotation, but she didn’t want anyone to find out. As she continues her night in Ward D, she gets an uneasy feeling that something isn’t right, something bad is going to happen. Then patients and staff go missing and Amy knows she’s in danger. She didn’t want to spend the night on Ward D, will she ever be able to leave?
WOWZERS!!! There is not a single dull moment in this book. It is SO good that I devoured it in less than a day – actually, in a mere few hours. There is so much to be curious about, little mysteries throughout the book. McFadden’s seamless writing grabs the readers’ attention and makes the reader need to know what is going to happen. I read this book so closely because I was trying to figure out the twist(s). I didn’t get one of them! When they were revealed, I was so mad at myself that I didn’t get them! I appreciated the fact that McFadden made a point to have the physician explain that the people were humans just like him and Amy, who happen to have their diagnosis – they aren’t their diagnosis. She really humanizes the patient and makes any reader that may be suffering from mental illness feel better about being open about it. I also loved the fact that this took place over the course of one night. It made it feel more authentic. This is absolutely a must read! Dare I say this is McFadden’s best book to date.
