An interesting tale of thinking outside of your own perspectives and following your faith.
Lerum has chosen to write in the genre of fantasy but with an interesting twist of Christianity and faith-based stories not often seen in this genre. I found the plotline of this book to be highly interesting, with easy-to-understand world building.
The character growth with Flick was interesting to see, and relatable, as he struggled with leaving behind his limiting past beliefs in pursuit of the love of his true God. I think many of us have likely felt this way at some point, and can relate to having beliefs that differ from wider society and needing to follow our own paths. Flick and Anca’s relationship and Anca’s friendship with the children was heartwarming to see unfold over the pages, and it was great to see them grow.
One thing that also set the book apart is the beautiful illustrations to accompany each chapter. It really help set the tone of the book and helped to envision the world that Lerum weaves in the story.
I did find myself wishing the last couple of chapters were a bit longer to really capitalize on Flick’s character growth seen in the story, and to provide more backstory into the characters discussed in the later chapters such as Marin and Olare. I found myself wanting to see more of Adriata’s epilogue, and if she ever decided to accept Flick and his family, now seeing how truly there for Anca that he was.
