Not sure if it was because I read it as part of a buddy read or it was just the right moment, but this was the first book I have loved in a while. I was starting to think it had to be me, but some had such great reviews.
Phoebe is having a rough go of things and decides to visit a country inn and have a decadent weekend before she offs herself. What she didn’t plan for was the wedding party that had taken over the inn and works against her plans.
This book is easily both tender and funny and it surprised me. Once I started, I didn’t want to stop and wanted to know about Phoebe and other wedding guests. The characters are complex and yet relatable. They are deep and had me pausing to think. It handles some deep and tough issues but never felt too heavy.
I connected with Phoebe from the start and rooted for her as she grew during the book. There are a lot of lessons to be learned from this book but self-love and kindness was at the top of the list for me.
This was a home run read for me and part of the reason was Helen Laser narrating the audiobook. She was able to become one with Phoebe yet still bring the other characters to life. I read this over a week and was disappointed every time I finished the day’s chapters. I could have easily finished in a day. The audio and the story were a perfect pair.
Thanks MacMillan audio for the free audiobook.
