I have never read this author before, but if all of her books are like this, I will absolutely read them ALL!!!! This is described as a spin off of a series of hers, but can be read as a standalone. In this book we meet Ryan, who grew up in foster care with his twin brother Jake. He wanted a better life for them and thought if he could steal enough money, they could make that happen. He stole from the wrong guy one day, and became a career thief. One assignment he’s given is to go to an inn and steal an ornament worth a lot of money. But when he gets there, he can’t do it. The woman who owns the inn gives it to him with the promise that he return the next year on December 1. He returns on December 2 the next year and finds that she’s passed away, but her daughter Annabelle is there. Annabelle is in trouble trying to run the inn, and she needs help, especially since her ex is planning on trying to take the inn from her. But Annabelle is a bit different, she is on the spectrum and a lot of people don’t understand her. Ryan does.. and they are slowly falling for each other.
This book was so wonderfully and so beautifully written. The ASD representation in this book was perfect. It showed that some didn’t understand Annabelle at all and tried to take advantage of her. But the book also showed Ryan understanding who she was, what she needed, and when she needed it. When moments were overwhelming for her, or when a touch may just be too much for her. He never tried to pressure her, he never tried to force her to do anything she didn’t want to (including being in huge crowds). He let her be who she was unapologetically, and he never once complained or needed her to change. He was so thoughtful. He put her first. It really was just absolutely beautiful to read.
This book also had a wonderful cast of characters, from Cynthia, James, and Joe… they made for some fantastic moments, but also for some hilarious moments. I especially loved when Ryan pretended to be Joe’s boyfriend! But these friends, they became family. And for someone like Ryan who grew up without really having that family other than his brother, it was really heartwarming that he was able to reform himself and find himself among these amazing people.
I will say that Annabelle’s parents, especially her father, really perturbed me. I can’t fathom parents treating their children that way, but I know it happens. It’s just really sad and it hurts my heart.
This has to be one of the best holiday rom-coms that I have ever read. And if holiday rom-coms are your thing, then you need to get your hands on this book.
