The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires [Dramatized Adaptation]

This is a dramatized version of a novel that I read some time ago, by Grady Hendrix.  It was one of my favorite horror books and I am very choose in this genre; it is not one that I normally read.  This is from my review of the original book.

This was interesting–in a good way. I am not typically a fan of horror but it was increasingly hard for me to pass up books with such interesting titles. When I started this, I was immediately gripped, and stayed that way through some rather graphic sections that with writers less gifted than Mr. Hendrix, I probably would have given up. I love his voice that shows through with these Southern housewives, some of whom were not immensely likeable. This is a different kind of horror than Stephen King, and I definitely prefer this author. I am also not a fan of vampires or vampire books, but I enjoyed this one.

I think that one element I enjoy in this book, as well as in Mr. Hendrix’s other works is that they work on a level that is different than many horror books.  His characters are well developed and there are always “lessons” about life, often how people treat one another, that come through in his novels.  In addition, for a man, he really writes about women and from their perspective well.

I am mixed on the audio.  Unlike most books that are on audio, this one has music in the background.  It was a bit distracting at first, although I grew used to it.  I did like the reactions, occasional screams and so on.  It was definitely a different experience.  In short, I think if there was a version of his books that was a dramatized audio, I would definitely prefer it to a digital version, but am not sure that I would “reread” it by listening to it after I have already read it.  Nonetheless, I can see how this kind of “performance” of certain books would be a definite enhancement.
