This is a heartwarming romance set in Greece about a young woman finding friendship and love far from home. It’s really not my usual kind of read but a friend gave me a pile of books to pass on and I was in the mood for a Lovely Book after some challenging days at work. While there’s nothing new or different in the plot, the descriptions of charming villages and mouthwatering dishes will have you dreaming of summer holidays.

28 year old Jory St
James is a wanderer, prone to jumping on a plane out of LA at short notice whenever the urge takes her. When she suddenly decides to go to Naxos for another adventure, no one expects that she will decide to stay, but there’s something enchanting about the tiny guesthouse and taverna and its lonely widowed proprietor Cressida…
This debut novel by a Kiwi-American is like a Greek version of Chocolat (a book which is referenced so I’m sure that’s not an accident.) There’s magical realism, delicious sounding food (sadly no recipes are included) a likeable heroine and every classic romance trope (that’s the bit that reminded me why I so rarely read this genre – but that’s what those who do want and expect so I don’t blame the author for conforming.) It’s a quick easy read that brightened a cold grey day, with the bonus of a gorgeous cover.
