I pretty well start out my reviews of Abby Jimenez’s books the same way: I have enjoyed every Abby Jimenez book that I have read. On the surface, they seem like a light romance story. But, they are so much more. There are always one or two subplots that have depth. Often animals (cats or dogs) play an important part. The characters are often quirky. There are always a few laugh-out-loud moments.
The author includes a short section at the start of the book listing the trigger warnings. There is quite a lengthy list at the beginning of this book.
This story involves a love triangle. Larissa chooses between two men, and wastes time wishing she had chosen the other. There is a lot of angst and drama.
The heavy part of this book is alcoholism, enabling, depression and lack of self-worth. It gets quite detailed and graphic.
There is always an animal involved. This time it’s a little crazy dog that was rescued. Boundless energy and a penchant for dead rats, mice etc. Most of the dog part was cute except when he was obsessed with the dead things. That could have been left out, or lessened.
I enjoyed the book. The ending was good. But the pacing slowed down in the middle. There were also time jumps in between chapters. I liked that the author balances heavy issues with humour, as in her other books.
I would have given the book 4.5 stars because of the pacing and dead animals. But, there are no half stars, so it’s a 5🌟.
