This book is an adventure. I learned more about operating a still than I ever thought I would need to know. I learned about bootleg runs and “Prohis”, Prohibition Officers.
The beginning of the book creates a descriptive and vivid setting, in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. And, we meet the Strong family: 3 daughters, their father and their grandmother. The daughters all have distinctly different personalities. The father runs the still, making moonshine whisky, along with the help of the youngest daughter.
Naturally, the reader can guess that there will be problems. What could go wrong? Prohibition, illegal still, gun-toting officers.
The surname Strong, perfectly describes the 3 daughters. I love strong female characters in historical novels. These young ladies stand out with their tenacity, bravery and adaptivity. Their grandmother is the “Medicine Woman” of the area, healing others with knowledge of herbs and common sense.
After a bit of a slow start, the book took off, lots of drama and action. Interesting characters, quirky personalities all kept me turning pages. Many things happened that I I did not expect. Certainly not a predictable storyline.
There is even an encounter with Al Capone! “Gangster. Bootlegger. Murderer.
The ending is neatly tied up and it made me smile. I’m sorry the book is over.
I’d give it more than 5 stars if I could.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the Advance Readers Copy.
