“I don’t know anything other than that it’s only when something’s damaged beyond repair that we realize how beautiful it was.”
I went into this book blind, and based on the title, I thought I was going to get a very different kind of book. Emma is married to Leo and they have a child together, Ruby. She loves this life very much, but Leo doesn’t really know who Emma is at all. Leo is an obituary writer, and when she’s sick with a serious illness, he finds himself planning her obituary. It’s when he does this does he learn that Emma is not who she says that she is, and that she’s been hiding her past from him throughout their entire time together. Including the fact that there is another love of her life.
I was in for a shock while reading this book! That’s what I get for going in blind! Haha. I went in blind because this book was chosen for my book club. I was a little iffy about the book at first. It felt very repetitive. They kept mentioning Emma’s secret and it just felt like it was being drawn out. I kept reading though, and it did get better. It got a lot better. Once the first secret was revealed, and then the next, the book really started coming together for me. I really just think it needed to get there faster.
There was such an emotional depth to be discovered with this book. I don’t want to give anything away with this review, but, it really makes one think about what they would do in a given situation. I do think this is going to make for a great book club discussion!
This is a good mystery, but not in a scary kind of way. So if that’s your kind of book, take a look at this one!
