The Infirmary is a prequel to the authorā€™s long-established DCI Ryan series (21 instalments at the time of writing) which I have not read, but have heard a lot about. I think this one came out midway through the series, and describes events which would be known to established readers of the series. The audiobook was going cheap on Audible, and I thought it would be a good way to check out the main character and the writing. I liked but didnā€™t love it – I generally avoid serial killer plot lines, and this just reinforced the reasons why. The hero is quite a cold fish but maybe he just takes time to grow on you.

Young women are being butchered across the city of Newcastle and the killer has started taunting the police to catch him if they can. He then ups the ante by taking the detective leading the case as his latest victim. DCI Ryan and his team must take over, but his superiors are pressuring them for a result and there are very few clues, until links to the local hospital are uncovered and a race against time begins to catch the Hacker before he kills again.

We listened to the multicast audio version of this, which has some well known names in the credits and I thought the voices were well done. From looking at other reviews, I get the impression that this one is much darker than the following books, and that only readers new to the series, like me, would not know who the killer was. As it was, the combination of the title and the limited suspect pool made it pretty obvious to me. The perpetrator’s motives are never really explained and it was all a bit gratuitously gruesome. Iā€™d also guessed what was going happen that would set up the rest of the series. I do already have Holy Island on audiobook so will give Ross another go, but the mystery aspects will have to improve if Iā€™m to continue beyond that.
