This story was a phenomenal read! It tells a story of the main character Shai, who is a forger. Shai was caught trying to replace an artifact with her replica that she forged. While waiting for her execution date, she was summoned to meet in front of the faction (arbiters) who currently rule the empire. When Shai met with the arbiters, she was told that an assassination attempt on the Emperor Ashravan left him comatose, and his wife dead. The deed? Shai must forge a new soul for the emperor within the 100 day mourning period. If Ashravan fails to emerge by the 100 days, his rule and everyone alongside him will lose their power and a new faction will be selected to rule and Shai will be executed.

This story started off with a bang and did not slow down. I was intrigued every second. This story made me root for Shai in hopes she will 1) able to pull off such an arduous task or 2) escape. It is interesting to see the relationships of the other characters when Shai is dealing with them. Some want her to use her skills to manipulate the emperor, others want to see her dead, and some form bonds with her unexpectedly. The author did a tremendous job at displaying human emotions in his characters. The characters did not seem fake or forced. I loved the plot and the story, but I have to say the characters were my favorite part of the entire book.
