The Colour of Fury is the fourth, and possibly/probably final book in the DS Regan Carter series, about a feisty Major Crimes detective in Leeds, England, and her relentless battle to bring down the head of an Organised Crime ring. Each book needs to be read in order, and preferably reasonably close together, if like me you struggle to remember plot details and minor characters between instalments: you don’t get any recap, and the whole thing takes place over a matter of  only weeks. These are gritty and sometimes bleak police procedurals with a spiky sarcastic heroine, who does not play well with others, but will do whatever it takes to get the job done.

I’ll keep this brief to avoid spoilers for the previous books – this one has Regan going after Kingston, the evil mastermind behind much of the mayhem plaguing the city. Now he has taken the only person she has left to care about, in a bid to control her and gain access to a valuable prize, and having infiltrated the police ranks, Regan can’t trust anyone, least of all Moniche, the new detective assigned to her by their exasperated boss, DI Benson. Luckily for her though, CSI Eddie Collins is also on the case…
I’m a longtime fan of the Eddie Collins series, and while I haven’t loved these spinoff books quite so much, mainly because they are darker with nastier villains and less humour, Barrett still manages to weave a tense & thrilling plot. These are crime stories rather than mysteries and the suspense lies in how our foul mouthed stroppy heroine can possibly survive, let alone triumph over the bad guys, with everything stacked against her. It’s a gripping read but I confess was a little disappointed by the rather abrupt ending – so do hope there will be at least one more book to see everyone get what they deserve. Thanks to Andrew Barrett for the ARC.
