The Buried and the Bound is a 2023 release for which I have been counting down the days. So imagine my delight when I discovered it nestled within one of my OwlCrate boxes.

The central concept of the book is undeniably brilliant. We are introduced to a solitary hedgewitch, navigating the intricacies of her magic and the limits of her surroundings. Alongside her, we encounter a tormented soul yearning to escape a dark pact and a young man plagued by fragmented memories of lost love. The potential for an enthralling tale is apparent, isn’t it?

Superficially, the book does deliver on its promise. The world-building is captivating, the magical system is intriguing, and the hidden secrets lurking in the shadows add a layer of darkness to the narrative. However, I struggled to form a genuine connection with the characters – characters that I really did want to like!

That said, the final twists of this book hit me pretty hard – hard enough that I can be certain that I’ll be reading the next novel in this series.
