The answers a novel by Catherine Lacey
First chapter, first paragraph:
There was at least one morning j was certain, though only for a few hours, that everything that could ever really happen to me had already happened to me. I woke diagonal in bed, no place to go, no immediate needs to meet, no company expected or calls to make. I watched red tea steep in hot water. The mug warmed my hands. I believed it was over.
When I opened the blinds, she was standing in the middle of the street, staring hard at my second-floor windows as if she’d known exactly where I was, had been waiting for this moment. We locked eyes – Ashley.
The tea slipped, shattered, and scalded my feet.
I try not to be so certain anymore.
Teaser:
Why was having never enough? Any why did wanting always feel so real? Rachel knew she wasn’t exempt from this cycle, just larger and older. She longer for her sons when she was alone and hated to see them go, but when they were with her, the having did not shine as brightly as the wanting had, though she’s known this was just how parenthood worked – fuzzy weeks of thrall and sleep deprivation punctuated by moments of joy and wholeness, a satisfaction stronger than any drug she’d ever known.
What do you think, would you keep reading?
