Despite what Goodreads says, this is not a Christmas book so I was initially disappointed. But as I continued to read, I got caught up in the story and eventually ended up enjoying it quite a bit. This is a romance but it isn’t the main focus of the book and it wasn’t sickly sweet and the couple wasn’t constantly making googly eyes at each other. I appreciated that the characters acted maturely and communicated with honesty which is so rare in romantic stories and was so bloody refreshing. The characters were raw and real, they made mistakes and had flaws but because they were open and honest with each other they figured out their differences.

The other part of the plot was about our two female leads, Hattie and Sophie sharing a traumatic past and helping each other through it. It was this part of the story that I enjoyed most. I liked how it turned into a friendship for them despite their age difference. Hattie’s chapters discussing the history of Riverbend and her family were my favourite parts of the book, it was like historical fiction. I would have devoured an entire novel on Riverbend alone.

Beth Moran takes the reader into a story about romance, grief, facing your past and friendship. The characters in this book are loveable yet many have plenty of unlikable things about them that make them seem feel like real people. If you enjoy feel-good romance focused on women’s friendship and getting over past hurts this is the book for you.
