I had been a fan of Rachel Caine for years, so naturally, when she dove into the world of thrillers, I had to follow her. Looking back at this series is so bittersweet for me. I love the dark world she created – and I mourn the loss of a wonderful author.

I was instantly captivated by Gina Royal’s world. In a single moment, everything changed for her and her children. A mishap exposed Mel Royal’s dreadful secret, a truth unbeknownst to Gina.

Initially, I wasn’t entirely sure how to feel about the premise: a wife fleeing from enraged internet strangers due to her association with a malicious murderer—someone she happened to be married to, yet remained oblivious to his actions? Admittedly, it’s a tough concept to swallow. However, it became increasingly difficult not to empathize with Gina/Gwen and her children. Eventually, you cheer for them, especially when faced with a world quick to judge without seeking the truth. It was oddly compelling.

What intrigued me the most wasn’t necessarily the threat posed by Mal (who, being in jail, didn’t seem particularly menacing to me, at least not initially). Instead, it was the danger emanating from the online masses—the ones convinced she had evaded justice for murder, those who believed they had the right to rectify the law’s oversight, and those who endorsed vigilante justice. This aspect added a fascinating twist to the narrative, one I found immensely engaging.
