SLAY: Stories of the Vampire Noire is a short story anthology that no fan of vampire lore is going to want to miss out on. The collection itself is groundbreaking, featuring Afrocentric vampire lore in breathtaking detail.

There are almost thirty shorts in this anthology, so the odds are good that there is something for everyone here. Some are more classic vampire stories, while others take a deep dive into a different side of the fang world – with an infusion of science fiction to top it off.

This was a memorable read for me, as it portrayed so many different vampire tales that I could never have hoped or dreamed of. It all starts off with Desiccant, a tale of a hungry vampire, and eventually makes it’s way to Blood Saviors, a tale that merges vampires, magic, and elementals into one cohesive story.

Out of all the stories in this collection, The Retiree by Steven Van Patten, The Last Vampire Huntress by Alicia McCalla, and Encounters by K.R.S. McEntire stood out to me above all the rest. They are true highlights of this anthology, showing the variety that is contained within these pages. I can’t speak for everyone, but I intend to follow up on writings by these authors!

The best part about this collection is that readers will have the ability to find new authors to fall in love with and follow. After all, they’ve already proven their ability to write about one of the most classic creatures in horror, and they did so with so much creativity.
