It’s another story with two timelines. The past is in the early 1950s, with a young lady trying to fight against her parent’s strict Jewish standards. Evelyn is a strong, outspoken and stubborn young lady, battling traditions set in the past, with her current “modern” ideals. Evelyn has not changed much in the current day timeline…..still stubborn and outspoken but much older. The focus is on her adult granddaughter, Jenna, who is struggling with life-changing circumstances.
As sometimes happens, the timeline from the past is much more interesting than the current day. The current day is ok but I found it a bit stilted. I think I was just trying get to back to the past.
I enjoy Confino’s writing style and I love her characters. This is the third book of her’s that I have read. Each book has had an older feisty female character who is annoying and lovable at the same time. The books have also had serious undertones but all have been balanced with humour, some of it not so subtle.
The story is about a huge family, including extended family. Honestly, there are times that I had issues trying to keep everyone straight. Who was who. Which generation was which. As a result, I didn’t like this book quite as much as the first two. Just a wee bit. But, it was still enjoyable, entertaining and fun.
