“Maybe that’s the last thing we forget. Or we never forget at all. Not really. We lose the words to say it. We lose the ability to show it. But we never lose the ability to feel it or recognize it when we see it. Love is the brightest color in a gray world.”
Xavier Rush, moody veterinarian and Samantha, sassy social medial coordinator for a mustard company meet when she brings in her cat. She calls him out and proves him wrong. They go out on a date, have an amazing time, and then she moves from Minnesota to California to help take care of her mom. Samantha tells Xavier to forget her… but they can’t forget each other. But Samantha’s family has a lot going on and she really can’t handle a serious relationship right now, especially a long distance one. But they can’t forget what they felt for each other, and they can’t give it up.
The title of this book, and this book as a whole, isn’t just about romance. Sam’s mother has dementia and she’s slowly forgetting things, including Sam. So yes, the majority of this book is about the family dealing with this disease that her mother has. The meltdowns, what happens when she can’t remember, the disease slowly getting worse, and the caretaking. It’s real, and it’s raw. I’m lucky that I’ve never experienced that in my family, but so many have. I’m sure this can be hard to read. The family dynamics of the caretakers all felt very real, even if you don’t agree with their choices.
There is obviously romance in the book as well. Xavier is moody and grumpy at first. And as we find out his background, it’s understandable. But I also love that he has a different side. I won’t say that it’s softer. It is a bit softer, but it’s more caring and sweeter. He’s not forever whispering sweet nothings, but he’s a caretaker at heart. He sees what is needed and he does it without asking. He observes, and he can read people. It’s not your standard swoon worthy kind of character, but it’s one that you can fall for and really appreciate. He turned out to be Samantha’s rock during really hard times.
The best part about these two was that they were realistic. They didn’t just routinely fly back and forth. They discussed finances. They went periods of time without seeing each other. But at the end of the day, they showed up for each other one way or another. That’s what made this couple special.
While this isn’t the most swoon worthy read of this author’s, it’s still a great one.
