Oh my! So many mixed emotions about this book. I don’t even know where to start.

The first half of the book: very confusing. Great storyline but I found it very poorly executed. The timeline flipped back and forth between now and then, but at times I couldn’t figure out which one I was reading. There didn’t seem to be fluidity. Disjointed. There are chapter headings, but they didn’t seem to mean anything. Not to me anyway. I felt like I was reading ABOUT the story, but not experiencing it, not immersed in it. I was almost ready to give up.

The second was much better. But, still, I couldn’t identify with the main character, Saoirse/Sarah. She felt like an empty shell. I could only see the surface. So hard for me to describe. Because of her experiences, she would have been an empty shell. But, I couldn’t feel it, I was just reading about it. She made poor choices related to her background, but I found it hard to empathize or relate.

I think if the storyline were laid out and rewritten differently, it could be an excellent book. The second half was completely like a different story….in style and continuity. It held my interest.

On a positive note, the ending was good. Both Soairse and her sister were victims of the system. Those who should have looked after them, did not. The story ended with hope.

Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the Advance Readers’ Copy.
