It has been quite a while since I picked up a fantasy book involving vampires, zombies and werewolves and I’m so glad I did! In the Rise of One we find ourselves emerged in a world where a zombie outbreak has threaten society, including Rise’s world where Rise is the leader of a vampire coven. Rise faces many struggles from things such as their current food supply, maintaining their safety and uncovering their past and what brought them to where they are.

In this fresh, modern take on vampires Dixon Reuel creates an interesting story with intriguing, memorable characters. The main characters are Rise, Ogrim, Cypriot and Salter and I loved each one of them. They were so unique and well written.

Like many first books in a series Rise of One sets up the book for sequel reads, which can be a bit slow but with all of the action happening in the present and the mystery around the past I found it quiet enjoyable and I’m curious to see where this ragtag group of vampires finds themselves next.

Learning that there are two prequels was so exciting, I can’t wait to check out On the Edge of Salt and Finding Home. Dixon Reuel creates a truly unique world and she is an author I will be keeping my eye on.
