Ripple is the fourth book in the excellent Breakthrough techno/geopolitical/scifi/action thriller series, about a small team of American scientists and soldiers who use a special computer system to talk to animals and thereby investigate mysterious phenomena of alien origin – that other countries are desperate to get their hands on. These are not separate stories so you definitely need to read them in order to understand what’s going on – it’s been a couple of years since I read the last one, Catalyst, and I could really have done with more of a recap – since I really don’t have time for a reread. Maybe one day, I’m sure I’d get a lot more out of the sciencey bits a second time round.

Alison and her dolphin friends Sally & Dirk travel to a repurposed oil rig hiding the alien spaceship discovered in the last book, but the Russians are on the way to steal what they can. John, Steve & DeeAnn travel to Rwanda with Dulce the cute gorilla & Dexter the capuchin to locate the second secret alien vault, and orphaned teen Li Na, whose DNA is being altered by the special alien bacteria injected into her by her father to save her life, is on the run from agents of the Chinese government.
If the summary makes it sound like there’s a lot going on here, it’s because there is! Plenty of suspense, intrigue, & pursuits, in between the adorable talking dolphin scenes and touching relationships between the human characters. I know I said it last time, but I mean it – must get on to the next one soon! I got this from Kindle Unlimited.
