“Humans. For the most part, you are dull and blundering. But, occasionally, you can be remarkably bright creatures.”

I’m not going to lie, I was not looking forward to reading this book. I actually had zero interest in reading it. But, my book club picked it for our October reads so I put it on hold and got it in time. Now I can say, I’m SO glad that I read this book!

After Tova’s husband died, she began working at an aquarium. She also lost her son, Erik, years before. She makes friends with an Octopus, Marcellus. Marcellus is a bright creature. He hates being held captive and dislikes his captures, but has created a bond with Tova. Marcellus has figured out what happened the night Tova’s son disappeared and he does everything he can to communicate it to Tova.

I can’t believe this is a debut novel. This is nothing like I have ever read before. The book starts off with a chapter from Marcellus’ point of view and I thought to myself, “I don’t know about this.” But then to see the connection, the bond form between Marcellus and Tova, it was just so beautiful. Marcellus also gives us some needed comic relief.

The book comes together nicely, putting all the puzzles pieces together to put into prospective the big picture of the book. The characters were endearing, especially Tova. I had put the puzzle pieces together in my head before the characters did, but once they did, I felt genuine happiness for them. I loved the ending, though I did have a question. I just won’t put the question here for those that haven’t read it.

This was genuinely a beautiful book. I think all different kinds of readers would enjoy this book. But is there anyone left that hasn’t read it?!
