Dave and his friends are escaping into several.
It’s been months since Alice Collins left town on a very literal “odyssey”. When she returns, it’s in a hail of fire and death. Dave, his friends and teachers have always existed in their sleepy town of Melville, now they’re being rudely awakened. An army of monsters is stirring in the forest. The old trees are growing arms and legs and developing a taste for people. Good thing Alice’s mysterious mother, Molly, has a strange house with a dark and seemingly bottomless basement that maybe, just maybe, leads to other worlds.
The Collins Family are always disappearing. For good reason. They have a secret that only few know: they can conjure blue fire with their bare hands…
Soon Dave is stumbling through an epic fantasy kingdom, a murderous countryside mansion, and having to mediate between a tortured creator and his creation. All the while, enemies swarm. Alice must use her special gift to fight murderous ravens, cyclops, hydras and thousands of man-eating trees. Their journey leads them all the way to a kingdom ruled by a sinister family with pumpkins for faces where the ultimate battle royale begins…
Cat’s Review:
Torn Pages was such a fun and compelling read! It felt like I was jumping into a whole new fantasy world – one that would exhilarate and scare any reader out there! Ralph Burton’s writing style made it easy to become invested in the story – and the characters. There was instantly this sense of something more going on, even when the world appeared to be exactly what one would expect. Right up until suddenly everything was turned on its head, of course.
Personally, I liked how different Torn Pages read from many other books I’ve read, even those of a similar genre. It’s always refreshing to get something different, it feels like a breath of fresh air, you know? Part of me is actually a little bit sad that this is a standalone novel!

While The Pixies is a much shorter read than Torn Pages, I found it to be just as captivating. Granted, any book that involves monsters is guaranteed to catch (and hold) my attention! The Pixies is a bit of a blend here – it’s both a traditional and totally new take on pixies, and I personally absolutely adored that. While there were many elements that felt familiar, Ralph Burton successfully turned it into a tale all of his own making. This would make a fantastic read for well…fantasy lovers! Especially those that want to try and get out of a rut, or experience a different fantasy adventure.
