This was a really interesting story about finding your place in life and society.
Nick is recounting his college years, revisiting the memories that created the man that he is today. I loved how it was set up to both recount the main characters experiences, but also to sort of examine how society was in the 70’s. The discourse about labels and needing to explain or define what you want or who you want is a really important thing to highlight.
I think the statement about not knowing why you want something other than it makes you happy and not needing any other explanation or justification is such a huge thing. It really is that simple, and it’s important that people remember and respect that about others. Unfortunately, Nick lived in a time where things were both accepted and controversial depending on the circles you were in. Also unfortunately, we deal with some of that still today in terms of race, sexual orientation and level of education, as well as background of how much money you have.
This was a great story about belonging and finding your way in the world with a lot of relatable experiences and humor.
