I adore Low’s “One” books. They show how a single day of your life can change your life and/or the lives of others. These others are always connected in some way, and there are always secrets to be revealed and decisions to be made.
Low has a special gift for taking life’s “what ifs” and making them into a compelling story. She is always able to connect the characters’ lives, changing them in ways we never expect. There is always an emotional hook as well. Low handles the characters’ struggles with the perfect mixture of empathy and witty charm. She always makes me feel like I am sitting and having coffee with friends, and there is something comforting about a story that feels like that, even when the themes get heavy. Low is a real gem; she writes tension wonderfully, and her style of writing never feels over-dramatic.
I am purposely being vague here, as the blurb gives a lot away. Let me just say, Low writes interesting characters, and they always show resilience. There are heavy themes in this, as is usual with this author, but feelings of hope and the giving of second chances always leave me feeling optimistic. Not everything is plausible in the plot, and there are some coincidences that have to happen, but Low’s realistic character depth makes it easy to want to go along for the ride. I would call this a page-turner with lots of heart.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
