This story is about Lauren. She and the women in her family are born with one chance to undo a single moment of their life. Lauren heads back home to Malibu for the summer while her husband is looking for work. She reconnects with her family and finds herself spending time with her first love. This is when Lauren has to face the choices that she made in the past and decide if she should rewrite her history.

Rebecca Serle writes wonderful time-bending stories. They’re always poignant, heartfelt, and ask the question “what if?” I always find myself thinking how profound her books are, and they leave me asking questions of myself if I were in the situation her characters are in. Serle writes emotional reads with an easy flow, and they always seem to resonate with me. Her characters pull me into their lives and I care what happens to them. Serle is so good at writing both sides of the coin. This one truly shines a light on first loves and reconnection and how bittersweet it can be.

Even though this is a fantasy type of read, the story feels real and human. True emotions and desires are shown throughout; life is full of missed opportunities, but be careful what you wish for. Some of the pacing was slower than I usually like, but it worked here because of the emotions that were simmering underneath. This one really tugged at my heartstrings and left me contemplating roads not taken in my own life. This was the perfect read over the weekend and a testament to the fact that the most enduring romances aren’t about the start—they’re about the restart, and some of the most beautiful love stories start over. Serle really does have a knack for making those “sliding doors” moments feel incredibly heavy and personal.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC.
