My Husband’s Wife

Even though Alice Feeney is a popular author, this is the first book of hers I have ever read. I enjoy suspense novels and this one was a nail biter all the way through. Listening to it on audio just added another dimension to it because of the sound effects that added to the level of tension.
The book draws in the reader immediately. Feeney sets up a situation from the beginning where the reader knows that things cannot be what they seem. The novel opens with a woman who goes for a run without her phone or her wallet and then finds that there is another woman in the house who purports to be her. So, we already know from the get go that something is wrong. We know that either the runner isn’t who she seems, or the woman in the house isn’t. Even the runner’s husband is in on it or he is fooled.
There are so many twists and turns in this novel, that the reader can get whiplash. There is also an element of otherworldness that is established by the husband and what he does for a living, which makes the reader wonder if there is not something mystical at play. Like many suspense novels, this can veer a little towards things that are hard to believe or actions by characters that make one wonder. However, I was gripped and I couldn’t stop listening and the only thing that kept me from finishing this in one day was the need for sleep.
Obviously, good suspense novels do contain many twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. Toward the end, the book did get a little convoluted and hard to follow, especially in an audio format. Nonetheless, it was entertaining and I would read her other books given the opportunity, when in the mood for a thriller.
