This is the second Kate Hewitt novel I have read.  Kate Hewitt writes quick reads that explore family relationships with flawed protagonists. This was no exception. Quick synopsis:  A rich couple Diana and Andrew are estranged from their daughter, Sophie.  She married a man they did not approve of him as he had a “past.”  Sophie dies in childbirth.  The novel explores how Sophie’s parents, the man she married, and later his mother, deals with the baby and most of all, their grief and prejudices.

I think if I had to think about what bothered me most it would be that I had trouble liking anyone in the book.  That the characters had flaws was good (lack of flaws leads to incredible boredom) but it was hard to not be irritated by all of them.  Then the other thing is that it felt like the characters started changing a bit too fast in order to reach the conclusion of the book and wrap things up.  It felt a little rushed. Often, I feel like books these days suffer from too much length under the more but better theory.  However, here I felt like another 20 pages at the end to make the ending feel a bit more natural would have been perfect.

That being said, the novel was engaging and did tackle some serious issues.

Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for providing me with an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for my honest opinions.
