Just to be perfectly clear, if you are not an I Love Lucy fan(atic), this is not the book for you. This is for use die hard fans that love the show and its cast so much, that we don’t only want to read about the stars; we want to know EVERYTHING. It also helps to enjoy memoirs and biographies.
Although I prefer memoirs to biographies (I often find the latter to be a tad tedious and dry), this book flows and reads more like a memoir. I learned a great deal about Vivian Vance and William Frawley that I did not know before. The book was easy to follow and was very structured. I think that there were some who did not necessarily like it because it was so structured. However, this is not a work of fiction and is really intended to inform more than entertain. Readers should also be prepared that this is not a happy-go-lucky study of the actors’ successful careers. William Frawley was not the jolly old man than many thought he was (including me). Vivian Vance had skeletons in her closet too, but they more impacted her mental health.
It is clear that the authors of this biography did meticulous research. There was some name-dropping but it was not excessive. They also did not mince words, which was good, especially since William Frawley never did.
I don’t expect that I am likely to pick up another book about the Mertzes but I do think this is just right for fans of the show who don’t know much about them.
