Fans of Liz Nugent (author of Lying in Wait, Unraveling Oliver) have been anxiously waiting for this day. The release of Little Cruelties. It’s her latest psychological thriller, and it is about as dark as it gets.

Little Cruelties follows on family – more specifically, three brothers, and the twisted paths they took through life. Born a year apart from one other, these three boys were never close, a gap that seemed to widen over the years.

William came first, and quickly went into the film industry, raising a family alongside. Then came Brian, the brother who seemed lost when it came to careers, but confident in caring for his siblings. Finally, little baby Luke, the runt of the family, who grew up to become a pop star.

Little Cruelties is perhaps the most aptly named book I have ever read. It may be a story about three brothers, but the true focus is on the pile of little cruel acts directed at one another, and at the world. These acts build up, becoming a physical being that the readers nearly drown in.

Despite the temptation to stay withdrawn from the Drumm family, Little Cruelties is a novel that sucked me right in. The introduction alone presents a quandary that demands solving, and it carries through right up until the end.

This is a twisted thriller through and through, with Liz Nugent’s writing style and ability shining through. It isn’t every day that one can read a novel about characters they truly hate – and still enjoy the book itself. Yet that is exactly what Nugent has brought to the table here.
