Don’t think… Thinking makes you slow. Being slow gets you killed.” One of the first lines of Lightning & Ember, and the very line that had me hooked instantly. Akina and her twin sister Miki are about to graduate from the most prestigious military school, until an unwanted guest arrives and with them, a shocking confession that involves the past. Follow a strong female main character and her two friends as they race against time to protect those they love from harm.

The world building and magic system were created beautifully. But what really got me hooked was the main female character. As I read the story and delve deeper into the book, as the story progressed, so did Akina. You get to watch Akina as she grows and learn more about herself. While reading, I couldn’t help but root for Akina and her friends as they find ways out of sticky situations. I loved how the author written her characters. The characters felt real. They had flaws, they still had a lot to learn about one another and themselves, but they were not written to be perfect as the story started. The descriptions of the fight scenes were written with so much detail that it felt real. I didn’t want the book to end, but I needed to know what happened. I am grateful that I could read such a magnificent story and I cannot wait to read the second book!
