Legendborn is a new YA contemporary fantasy, and yet that description, while accurate, doesn’t grasp the whole of this novel. Written by Tracy Deonn, this is a novel that provides a thrilling fantasy tale. All while challenging the norm and expectations of the larger fantasy world.

Bree Matthews’ entire world changed the night her mother died. Suddenly, everything was either ‘before’ or ‘after’, herself included. At only sixteen she wasn’t ready to lose her mother, but she does believe she’s ready for her time at UNC as part of their high school program.

Little did she know, that decision would further alter her life. She quickly discovers a world of magic. More than that, she learns that there is more than one branch of magic, and why everyone is so secret about it.

I absolutely adored Legendborn, and just about every detail that was woven into this story. It was beautifully done, as it portrayed a strong and confident character going through hell and back for her rights and beliefs.

Bree’s story is unique in that it takes many fantasy elements that readers are familiar with, and does something totally different with them. I have never seen a combination quite like what Deonn wrote here, and I’m impressed and a little bit obsessed with the results. One thing is certain, I’m going to be counting down the days for the (currently untitled) sequel!
