”I try to forget her. It’s impossible. Growing up together, Conor and I shared all our firsts. First love, first kiss, first… Not all our firsts. We were sixteen the night she was violently assaulted while I helplessly watched. I’ll never forget the sounds of her suffering. Or my inconsolable agony when she left Oklahoma. Years later, she returns to honor our teenage pact. Except the boy she loved is gone, replaced by a ruthless cattle rancher knotted with secrets. She doesn’t know my dark cravings or the trails of sin that lead to her. I don’t deserve her, but one truth remains. She’s mine.”

Recently I’ve been trying to expand my tastes from just classics, thrillers, and horror. So I looked through Apple Books and there is a surprising amount of free books on there, this one is first in a series from Pam Godwin. It combines thriller with romance and I think that’s why I went for it. I do need to say there is a pretty graphic assault of the sexual nature starting out in the beginning of the book so be warned if it’s a trigger for you. While the story line was pretty easy to figure out I felt there were a few plot holes that will hopefully be fixed in the next story. Jake has a dominant kink that isn’t really explained, while Conor is supposed to be a damaged submissive? It was hard to follow because she has this strong, independent streak but then turns into a doormat and back and forth for a lot of the story. There could be a reason this was free on Apple Books. I give it a three out of five.
