I have been hearing about Ink Blood Sister Scribe nonstop for nearly two months now, so when I saw it pop up on BOTM, I knew I had to nab it. And overall, I have to say that I’m thrilled to have been so impulsive with my selection.
In truth, I desperately wanted to love Ink Blood Sister Scribe. Although I didn’t dislike it, I didn’t end up loving it either. The magical world within the story is captivating, but unfortunately, I failed to establish a genuine connection with any of the characters.
My primary issue with the narrative lies in the lack of agency exhibited by the main characters. They all seem to be passive participants, reacting to the world around them or simply carrying out the orders or advice of a single individual. For example, Esther goes on the run solely because her father instructed her to do so. Meanwhile, Joanna remains sequestered at home, shutting out even her own mother, once again due to her father’s instructions. I could go on and on, but I’ll stop my rant short there.
Long story short – Ink Blood Sister Scribe is a solid read, but it had the potential to be so much more. Still, I don’t regret the time I spent reading it.
