This is another book that I went into blindly. I enjoyed a couple of this authorβs other books and I was looking for something I knew I could easily get into. In an Instant ended up fitting my needs, and more.
A family and a group of friends go on a weekend ski trip in a camper van and end up going off the road and tumbling down a cliff. The rest of the book is based on what happens at that scene and then, the fallout of that accident.
This is a hard book to review without spoilers. The title, In An Instant, is very appropriate. We all know that life can change in an instant. This book shows us how true it is. In a crisis, people have to make decisions. Sometimes these decisions may have life-altering effects on others. But the result may benefit the decision-maker or their family. Not out of malice but out of self-preservation.
Quote from the book:
Our humanity is determined more by circumstance than conscience. This really brought into perspective many of the actions of the characters.
Finn, a teenage girl of the family involved, is the narrator of the story. She has a unique view of it all and is very insightful. She learns a lot about her family and her friends. Some are things that she would rather not know but she is not in a position to act upon her knowledge. It is a very hard place for her to be in. I love her character!
At times this book is hard to read, especially right after the accident. It is very descriptive, making the scene and the desperation come alive in my mind.
This book also raised the question, What would you do? many times. Some decisions are very hard to make. The end was very good. There was closure and there was hope.
