Deacon and Phoebe couldn’t be more opposite of each other – she’s full of pink and sunshine, and he’s full of sadness and doom. He is a Slater after all, and he did just get out of prison. Now he’s living above Phoebe. Not knowing it was him living there initially, she went to welcome her new neighbor with some baked goods from her bakery. But when Deacon opened the door, she was surprised. Though, he keeps his distance and didn’t accept her baked goods. It wasn’t until he saved her one night that they began really talking. That lead to feelings. They weren’t supposed to make sense together, but they did. Until someone from Deacon’s past came back and got in the way, causing trouble for both of them.

Be still my heart. I don’t know what I’ve done to read all these amazing romance books back to back but this is hands down a 5 star read! This is my first introduction to this author, and therefore this series. This can be read as a standalone. I didn’t feel like I missed anything from the first book. This book is told in Phoebe and Deacon’s point of view, which I really love because I really enjoy getting the guy’s POV. I always want to be able to get in the head of the guy so that I can tell what he is thinking and feeling.

Deacon is rough around the edges. He hasn’t had an easy life and then he went to prison for 4 years. He doesn’t trust easily, he doesn’t open up easily, and he hasn’t experienced too much life outside of prison. He was kind of young when he went in. So when it comes to dating and women, he’s very inexperienced. This author handled his inexperience very well. She was true to what it would have been like for him, and she had Phoebe be so awesome about it.

I also really loved Phoebe’s family. They are of course protective of her, but also know when it take a step back and trust her decisions. They knew and understand that just because you come from a family with a bad reputation doesn’t inherently make you a bad person. They have Deacon a fair chance.

Deacon stole my heart. Their relationship made my heart bloom, break, and piece back together. Deacon really was everything I wanted him to be and more. He will forever live rent free in my head.
