Deacon and Phoebe couldnāt be more opposite of each other ā sheās full of pink and sunshine, and heās full of sadness and doom. He is a Slater after all, and he did just get out of prison. Now heās living above Phoebe. Not knowing it was him living there initially, she went to welcome her new neighbor with some baked goods from her bakery. But when Deacon opened the door, she was surprised. Though, he keeps his distance and didnāt accept her baked goods. It wasnāt until he saved her one night that they began really talking. That lead to feelings. They werenāt supposed to make sense together, but they did. Until someone from Deaconās past came back and got in the way, causing trouble for both of them.
Be still my heart. I donāt know what Iāve done to read all these amazing romance books back to back but this is hands down a 5 star read! This is my first introduction to this author, and therefore this series. This can be read as a standalone. I didnāt feel like I missed anything from the first book. This book is told in Phoebe and Deaconās point of view, which I really love because I really enjoy getting the guyās POV. I always want to be able to get in the head of the guy so that I can tell what he is thinking and feeling.
Deacon is rough around the edges. He hasnāt had an easy life and then he went to prison for 4 years. He doesnāt trust easily, he doesnāt open up easily, and he hasnāt experienced too much life outside of prison. He was kind of young when he went in. So when it comes to dating and women, heās very inexperienced. This author handled his inexperience very well. She was true to what it would have been like for him, and she had Phoebe be so awesome about it.
I also really loved Phoebeās family. They are of course protective of her, but also know when it take a step back and trust her decisions. They knew and understand that just because you come from a family with a bad reputation doesnāt inherently make you a bad person. They have Deacon a fair chance.
Deacon stole my heart. Their relationship made my heart bloom, break, and piece back together. Deacon really was everything I wanted him to be and more. He will forever live rent free in my head.
