“Love isn’t something you can cup in your hands, and I have to believe that means it’s something that can’t ever be lost.”

Alice Scott and Hayden Anderson have one month to prove themselves to Margaret Ives in order to win the chance to write her autobiography. They have each signed an ironclad non-disclosure. This means they can’t even talk to each other about what Margaret has told them and they both feel like she has been lying to them. Alice and Hayden have an undeniable pull to each other, but they fear that Margaret’s decision as to who will ultimately write the book will change their dynamic and try to stay away from each other as more than friends.

Emily Henry is usually one of my go to authors. When I saw that this book come out, I wanted to read it without even knowing what it was about. I wish that this book was not described as a romance. Ultimately, it was not a romance. This was really more of a women’s lit book, which is completely okay. It could have been a romance if it had wanted to be, but it just wasn’t. There was too much focus on Margaret Ives and her family; the interviews and research that Alice was doing in order to put together her book proposal so she can be the author chosen to write the book.

The little bit of romance that was in the book was pretty decent. There was a bit of push and pull between Alice and Hayden – the should we/shouldn’t we – the will they/won’t they. You want to see them wind up together but you don’t know if it’s going to happen. Honestly, it felt a little drawn out at times too.

There are a few reveals in this book that I didn’t see coming, so there is an air of mystery here. I enjoyed that part of the book. I enjoyed the ending as well. Especially the part with Alice and her mom (no spoilers here!). It’s not a bad book, just not the romance I’ve come to expect.
