This is the story of Greg, Betty, and their daughter, Charlotte (Charlie). They are a damaged family. The damage has multiple roots: hoarding, mental health issues, dementia, parental abandonment, secrets and lies. Despite all these negatives, there is a need for love, acceptance and reconciliation.

There are dual, alternating narrators, Greg’s timeline is the past, starting in 1969. Greg’s story gradually explains what is happening in the present. Charlie’s story is the present, dealing with things that happened in the past that still affect her. The two narrators and two timelines tell the family tale very cohesively.

This might be a hard book for some readers. My family has had to deal with both dementia and hoarding. This helped me identify with the characters and feel empathy for them. The title of the book tells it like it is.

I liked the ending.
