Meet Jesse. Daughter to Delores, a mother to who didn’t really want her. A mother who mothered any more children and didn’t want to take care of them. A mother who expected Jesse to take care of her siblings. A mother who tried to manipulate Jesse at every turn. Jesse’s grandmother tries her hardest to do what is best for Jesse, but ultimately it didn’t work out. This memoir follows Jesse’s childhood, and her journey into adulthood.
I will say this first, this book is very well written. The amount of detail and imagery within it is excellent. It is hard to believe that Jesse really endured everything that is written within this book. I wanted to grab Jesse and remove her from her circumstances. Being a mother, I cannot imagine treating any of my children the way that Delores treated Jesse. It is interesting that there is the inclusion of documentation, journals, letters, official documents to aid in the understanding of Jesse’s life. What amazes me is Jesse’s strength to forge forward, find happiness in her adult life, and find the strength to put pen to paper and tell her story. She could have easily fallen down a different, more destructive path, but she didn’t. I love the fact that Jesse was able to break the pattern of abuse she endured and form relationships with her grandparents, aunts, siblings, and nieces and nephews. It takes a lot of strength to get through everything that she went through, and I applaud her.
