In complete disclosure, I did not read any of the other books in this series. Then again, it was marketed as a standalone prequel. I do think it works as one. This is a supernatural thriller which I was not quite expecting; I was expecting a psychological thriller.
In this novel, Sabina had given up her baby for adoption 17 years before and has suffered emotional repercussions ever since. Books involving adoption always pique my interest since I am an adoptee myself. The police inform Sabina that Andrea is missing. Although it was 17 years before, Sabina cannot sit idly by so she intervenes to try and help the police locate Andrea. That involves Sabina in a quagmire of evidence and takes her into the realm of the supernatural and also puts her life at risk.
I read that this author based this book on a true event, and am curious enough to seek out that information. I will also most likely read the next book in the series. However, I have a few misgivings, although they do not have to do with Ms. Hili’s writing as much as some of the content. This information is relevant to readers; this book contains triggers. If a potential reader has difficulty reading about child abuse, this may not be the book for them. There were moments when this novel was hard to read.
Nonetheless, it was a good read. There was suspense and compelling characters. I think if it was not a five star read for me, it was for two reasons. One is that I felt the entry of the ghosts felt too abrupt; one minute it was not a ghost story and the next minute it was. Perhaps I missed it, but I think it would have helped me if there had been some clue earlier that this was going to veer into the supernatural. In addition, while this novel had multiple perspectives throughout which allows us to uncover a good deal of information, it became a bit confusing at times. That said, I enjoyed the novel.
Thanks to NetGalley and Dynamite Books for introducing me to this author in exchange for my honest opinions.
