“It would be a mistake to believe too much in anyone’s innocence.”
This was one of my book club picks and it is suspenseful right from the very beginning! Christa, with her boyfriend Kiernan, head with a tour group to the Rocky Mountains for a vacation during the winter for some fun in the snow. But a snowstorm hits the region, a tree falls and blocks the road, and they are stuck to find some shelter nearby. The tour guide has called for help, and it’s only one night so it shouldn’t be so bad, right? WRONG. One by one the tour group is killed, and it’s only a matter of time before it’s Christa’s turn. With only a few left from the group, everyone is a suspect and it’s hard to trust anyone. Can she survive?
Coates does a great job of keeping you in suspense from the very first page and keeping up that suspense throughout the entire book. It was hard to know who I should suspect. Coates definitely kept me guessing throughout the entire book. This has to be one of my favorite thrillers that I read this year. It really is that good. Coates writing is just full of skill.
I really enjoyed Christa. She is strong, strong willed, smart, tenacious, and doesn’t ever give up. While she has her own suspicions, she keeps an open mind. She threw herself into trying to solve the mystery and solve their problems rather than stand by letting the others do it. I also loved that there was a vulnerable side to her as well, and that she has regrets about her past.
Now, the twist at the ending…. WOW!!! I didn’t see that one coming AT ALL!!! I was sooooooo shocked. When I read it, my mouth dropped open. The only reason that I didn’t give this book 5 stars, is that the ending left some questions unanswered.
