About the book

Want a guy who plays by the rules? Don’t pick Virgo.

Ex-FBI negotiator Eddie Virgo is doing hard time for taking the law into his own hands. But now the Bureau needs him back. Virgo is offered an early release if he agrees to work one last job…

Stacy, the daughter of wealthy senator Daniel Donovan, has been kidnapped and Virgo needs to negotiate her release.

Seems easy enough. But when the kidnapper makes an impossible demand, Virgo is catapulted into a deadly race against time.

Teaming up with LAPD detective Jennifer Accardi, Virgo leads the hunt for Stacy and realizes he has stumbled on a sinister plot which threatens to compromise national security.

Now, up against a lethal combination of ruthless gangsters and powerful DC players, Virgo is looking at some pretty long odds.

But he’ll do whatever it takes to free Stacy from the sadistic psychopath who is holding her.

The only question – can he get to Stacy before… Zero Hour?

Zero Hour – book 1 of the brilliant action thriller series featuring Eddie Virgo. Perfect for fans of Lee Child, Jason Kasper and David Archer.

My Review

(Eddie) Virgo is an ex-FBI negotiator whose temper got him a long prison sentence.  He’s sprung from jail to try and find and save a senator’s kidnapped daughter, Stacy.  Does it seem a little too good to be true?  He’ll have to figure that out.

This is a good start to a new series.  The author really captures the fine line between good and evil and the gritty side of government.  To balance the grit, there is a little humor too.  My mind kept going to astrology with the name Virgo and Eddie makes a joke or two about the play off his name and the sun signs.  I also appreciated some of the music as it appealed to my Gen X taste.

The plot is complex with a few twists along the way.  Virgo doesn’t always play by the rules or play well with others, but he gains a little support as he searches for Stacy.  At times it feels like he is about ready to go too far, but he is focused on figuring out who he can trust.

I’m excited to see where this series goes and if book two is as engaging as book one.

About the author

Growing up, Steve Sheffield always wanted to be a writer and went to university where he managed to gain a bachelor’s degree in English Literature. However, due to spending too much money on drink, he was forced to abandon his literary ambitions and get a job in the police, where the pay was more reliable. He became a detective and worked multiple homicide inquiries and investigations into organized crime, while also completing a master’s degree in Criminology. The final seven years of his service in the force, he was head of a specialized crime department responsible for intelligence, surveillance, drugs and undercover operations. These days he writes books about a different kind of investigation and justice — quicker, unorthodox, brutal and generally more satisfying. He still spends too much on drink.

This is his first action thriller with Inkubator Books.
