About the Book

Wolfe Trap is Cost’s debut novel in a new series surrounding a PI, Clay Wolfe, in the fictional coastal town of Port Essex, Maine. Instead of a large white shark threatening the populace, it is heroin being smuggled through lobster traps that is endangering the town.

What evil lurks in Port Essex, Maine?
Clay Wolfe is a former Boston homicide detective who has left the police department to return home to Maine to care for his elderly grandfather and open a private detective agency. Haunted by being orphaned at an early age, and jaded by the corruption of the big city, Clay is happy to hit pause and investigate minor crimes.

“I want you to find the person who sold the drugs that killed my grandbaby.”
When he is hired to find out who sold the drugs that killed a six-month-old baby girl, he has no idea of the evil that he is going to uncover in the underbelly of his hometown.

Wolfe Trap is a thrilling ride set in a small Maine town with rich characters and shocking plot twists that will keep the reader rapt until the final pages.

Acclaimed psychological thriller author, Joseph Souza, on Wolfe Trap. “WOLFE TRAP introduces us to an eccentric and interesting cast of Maine characters…This gripping plot moves with lightning speed until it’s explosive and thrilling conclusion. Here we have murder, drug-smuggling lobstermen, heavy drinking, art theft and budding romance. Despite our hero’s hard-drinking and prolific womanizing, Clay Wolfe is a sympathetic and likable character. Cost’s jam-packed plot should appeal to all lovers of private detective fiction. I eagerly look forward to next book in this series.”

The Clay Wolfe/Port Essex series follows the highly lauded Mainely Mystery series by Cost. Acclaimed author Gerry Boyle selected the first in that series, Mainely Power, to be the Maine Humanities Councill Read ME fiction book of the year. “I settled in with the colorful cast of this midcoast tale and felt that pang that good crime fiction gives you—you bear down on the resolution with the reservation that part of you doesn’t want the story to end.”—Gerry Boyle

Wolfe Trap is available for pre-order, either online or through your favorite bookstore, and will be in stores everywhere on June 23, 2021.

Wolfe Trap, published by Encircle Publications, is distributed by Ingram.

My Review

What a great start to a new series. Wolfe Trap introduces Clay Wolfe, a former Boston detective that has moved back home to Maine to start a PI business and care for his Grandfather.

When he is tasked with finding who sold the drugs that killed a baby, he has no idea the can of worms that it will open. What I like is there is no shortage of suspects even though that changes as you move through the story. The plot moves along and there seems to be danger and evil at every turn.

I really like Wolfe and the cast of characters in the book. While the characters are flawed, I think that is what makes them seem so real.

There are many twists and turns and you can’t predict where the next clue will take them and who will be in danger. I can’t wait to see where this series will go. If you like a well thought out crime plot, this is your book. You can’t help but root for Clay to solve his case.
