My review: One Word. WOWZA!

It’s never too early to get your little one interested in reading and science, luckily this book inspires both. I can be honest and say I don’t know much about science, let alone chemistry but this book hits the nail on the head for any type of learner. As soon as I sat down to read this to my little ones they were excited. My twenty month old loves the vibrant colors and illustrations while my nine-year-old was all about the new vocabulary words she learned from it and I just loved that they loved it! While I did not know all of the words or their meanings, I was doubly appreciative of the definitions being included for each letter. This book will be a welcome addition to any child’s library, I know a few people I’ll be getting copies for this Christmas.

Tell us about other books you’ve written and where do you find your passion for writing?

Christi: I have a passion for science and I am so excited to share that passion with other people through my book. It took a long time to write my first couple of books about chemistry, but I am glad I persevered and finished them.

There is a long process that goes into writing each alphabet book I have done. I first make a list of common concepts and words found in the particular science subject I am writing about, chemistry for example. I then choose which concept/word I like best for each letter of the alphabet. After I have chosen a word, I look through my old textbooks and reputable science websites for information about that one concept – I usually read at least ten different sources for each word and write down notes for each which is usually 1-2 full pages of notes. I then dwindle all those notes down into a couple of sentences. It is the most time-consuming part of the writing process but I feel it is key to producing a great book.

To date I have written seven books, and six of them are published. I wrote five chemistry alphabet books, each one focused on a different subdiscipline of chemistry: general chemistry (two editions), organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and biochemistry. The Explore the World of Chemistry book is an accumulation of the other chemistry alphabet books, but aimed towards a younger audience – each letter in the Explore the World of Chemistry book is taken from one of my more advanced alphabet books. I have also written another alphabet book that highlights diverse scientists, and each spread in the book has one male and one female scientist so boys and girls can see that there are scientists that look like them.

I am excited to publish my seventh book (it is in the editing stage right now) and have many more book ideas that I have jotted down. There are still many aspects of science that I have not delved into yet – I am looking forward to exploring those and learning about them myself.

Meet the Author:

When Christi Sperber was pregnant with her first daughter, Emma, she wanted to add STEM books to Emma’s bookshelf. But the Mom who has a Master’s in Chemistry noticed that there weren’t many chemistry-related books available for babies and toddlers. The few that did exist, she noticed, weren’t factually correct. That’s when Sperber had an idea: launch her own publishing company – Nanoscale Scientists Publishing LLC – to introduce young kids to the wonderful world of science at an early age.
